Let Someone Else Do The Cooking This Christmas

Next to Thanksgiving, Christmas is one of the biggest holidays of the year that involve lots of food. Just as most of us did in November, families tend to gather each Christmas Day (or pretty close to it) for a celebratory/observational meal. But what if you and yours simply aren't relishing the idea of cooking another turkey or ham or whatever main dish you traditionally feature?

The good news is that you can get away from all that meal-prep drudgery this year and take the whole gang out for a holiday dinner in the Great Smoky Mountains. Between Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and Sevierville, you'll literally have hundreds of eateries from which to choose throughout Winterfest and the holiday season as a whole. But a surprising number of restaurants will actually be open on Christmas Eve and/or Day, giving your family a welcome place to enjoy some good food and companionship. And the best part is that someone else will do all the cooking - not to mention washing all the dishes.

What follow are a few of our picks for restaurants to consider on a visit to the Smokies this season. In each writeup, we'll include their Christmas Eve/Day hours and give you a quick overview of that eatery's type of cuisine and signature items.

Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant and Farmhouse Grill – These popular Sevierville restaurants entice year-round with their lineup of farm-favorite dishes, from breakfast through dinner. Apples are the stars of the menu at both locations, and you'll see them appear in items like apple fritters, apple butter and apple juleps. Otherwise, dig into classic dishes ranging from bacon-and-egg breakfasts to chicken and dumplings to homestyle meatloaf. Christmas Day: 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., reservations only!

Five Oaks Farm Kitchen – Also located in Sevierville, this restaurant likewise offers three meals a day, with dishes that include Eggs Benedict, breakfast casseroles, smoked ribs, sugar-cured ham steak, fried chicken, open-faced pot roast and more. Or how about some fried chicken livers for your Christmas meal? This place can accommodate. Christmas Eve: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Christmas Day: 12 to 8 p.m.

Holston's Kitchen – We'll keep the cuisine in Sevierville a moment longer with this popular stop, where the fare includes inventive salads, pasta dishes, steaks, seafood, chicken and local favorites like pork spare ribs and sizzling cast-iron fajitas. Burgers and sandwiches round out the selection. Christmas Eve: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

In Pigeon Forge, keep an eye out for the possibilities at J.T. Hannah's Kitchen, which is located on the Parkway. You'll find a little bit of everything at this dining spot, from fried cheese-curd appetizers to grilled Hawaiian chicken to specialties like ribeye steaks and grilled sirloin. Or how about trying one of eight different burgers or even their Old Fashioned Reuben? Christmas Eve: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Christmas Day: 2 to 10 p.m.

The Old Mill Restaurant in Pigeon Forge is another popular dining destination. Located on the banks of the Little Pigeon River, this eatery, which is adjacent to the historic Old Mill, serves a wide variety of down-home meals. The possibilities include omelets for breakfast, chicken pot pie or pan-fried country ham for lunch, or Southern-fried boneless pork chops for dinner. It's all yummy! Christmas Eve: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Reagan's House of Pancakes – A lot of folks enjoy breakfast for dinner, so why not consider a pancake place? There are lots to choose from in the Smokies, but this Parkway pancake palace will be open for the holidays. Hopefully, they'll be well stocked up on syrup and butter. Christmas Eve and Day: 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Next week, we'll be back with even more holiday-dining options. In the meantime, you have just a couple of weeks left to get in one more Smoky Mountain zipline adventure at our outpost in Pigeon Forge. Call us today to schedule one of the few remaining tour times!
