Yep, there are so many music theaters and shows in the Great Smoky Mountains that it has taken us three weeks to write about them all. We started two weeks ago at the north end of Pigeon Forge and have been working our way south along the Parkway. This week, we're going to wrap up our music theater series with the home stretch of venues and great shows that visitors to the Smokies can enjoy this summer.
It's worth noting that since we're looking at theaters on the southern end of the Parkway, all of these showplaces are within just a few miles of Smoky Mountain Ziplines. That means you could spend a morning or afternoon having a blast on one of our Pigeon Forge zip line tours and then wind down your day with a matinee or evening show. There are dozens of possibilities!
This is one of the truly unique theatrical offerings in the Smokies. Taking center stage are world-class lumberjack athletes, competing in a wide variety of timber-sport events that all take place in the context of an onstage feud between the Dawson and McGraw lumberjack families. This interactive show includes a good dose of comedy as well and takes place rain or shine in a unique covered outdoor pavilion. It also bills itself as “America's first supper show,” featuring a camp-style meal of barbecue pulled pork, mac and cheese, baked beans, cobbler and more.
Here's another show-and-dinner combination, this one courtesy of Dolly Parton's entertainment company. As many of the other local dinner shows do, Pirates Voyage combines narrative and competition as two rival pirate gangs clash on land, sea (two moving pirate ships) and air (aerial stunts). The swashbuckling action is accompanied by a multicourse meal that includes creamy vegetable soup, a biscuit, pan-fried chicken, sugar-cured ham, corn on the cob, mac and cheese, dessert and beverages.
This show has been around the Smokies for some 30 years now (25 in its current facility), offering all ages a wide variety of comedy and variety entertainment. Guests will enjoy clean comedy courtesy of stand-up comics, jugglers, ventriloquists and more. There are also barnyard animals, live music and lots of audience participation.
This Parkway venue is home to two musical tribute shows: A Salute to Elvis, which starts at 7:30 p.m. and “A Tribute to Conway Twitty,” a matinee show beginning at 2 p.m. five days a week.
This show has been packing audiences in for three decades now. This Dolly Parton production is one of the very first dinner-show combos in the Smokies, well known for its pre-show meal of a whole rotisserie chicken, pork loin, famous creamy vegetable soup and more. The show itself is another competition-based show starring a stable of magnificent horses and their talented riders, all doing their thing in a friendly competition between the blue and the gray. The show also includes music, dance numbers, comedy and more live animals, all leading up to a patriotic finale that brings all sides together.
And speaking of Dolly, don't forget that there are even more music venues at Dollywood theme park in Pigeon Forge. There are both indoor and outdoor stages throughout the park, collectively serving up a wide variety of music styles, from country and bluegrass to gospel and rock and roll. Titles include Forever Country, From the Heart - The Life and Music of Dolly Parton, Fun Day! with the Hall Sisters, Heartsong, the music of eclectic vocalist and instrumentalist Robinella, Smoky Mountain String Band, The Kingdom Heirs, The Tones and Wild Roots Band.
